The SSIS Catalog book was written as a guide to those who develop SSIS packages and are currently using or are considering implementing the SSIS catalog.
This brief book, at less than 130 pages, mixes introductory material with seasoned best practices, along with some of my real-world experiences. I expect that it will be useful for those new to the SSIS catalog as well as those experienced on this platform.
Having worked with SSIS since just after its original release in 2005, I’ve worked with every gradation of this product. I share some of my learnings in these pages as I compare SSIS catalog functionality to the legacy package-deployment design. I also make it a point to call out where a particular function doesn’t work well, or where the legacy design is actually more flexible. While I am a big fan of the SSIS catalog, I also think the readers of this book (and the SSIS user base at large) should know what it does well and where it is lacking.
The first edition of this book was published in July 2020. As things always do, this product will evolve over time. Further, I’m certain that the astute readers of this book will find errors, omissions, or clarifications. For those reasons, I expect that there will eventually be a “new and updated!” version of this book. If you have comments or suggestions for things that should be either changed or added, please drop me a line and let me know.
